The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has condemned the violent incidents that erupted during the Premier League match between Nsoatreman FC and Asante Kotoko on Sunday, February 2, 2025. The game, held at Nana Kronamansah Park, was marred by chaos, as alleged supporters of the home team began throwing objects towards the Kotoko bench, interrupting the match in the second half. The situation escalated quickly, leading to confrontations between players and tragic consequences for fans.
The violence peaked when Kotoko captain Justice Blay was seen throwing an object back into the stands, igniting further altercations among players on the field. The disturbing events took a grave turn when a fan of Asante Kotoko was fatally stabbed, highlighting the serious implications of the unrest and the urgent need for measures to ensure the safety of all involved in the sport.
In response to the chaos, the GFA issued a strong statement denouncing the acts of violence and lawlessness. The organization described the events as “unacceptable” and acknowledged the tragic loss of life, injuries sustained, and property damage caused during the match. “This is an unacceptable blemish on the integrity of our game,” the GFA stated,
Taking immediate action, the GFA Executive Committee invoked Article 14(2) of the Premier League Regulations, which led to a ban on the use of Nsoatreman FC’s home venue until further notice. This decision was made in a bid to protect the safety of all stakeholders while investigations into the incident are conducted. The GFA underscored the importance of upholding a safe sporting atmosphere, stating that such measures are crucial for the future of the league.
As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen what further actions will be taken to address the underlying issues that led to this violent outbreak.
