The John Dramani Mahama’s administration through its spokesperson, Mr. Felix Ofosu Kwakye, has questioned the legal basis for the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) intended nationwide strike action scheduled for Thursday, February 20, 2025.
The executives of CLOGSAG have threatened to embark on a planned nationwide strike over the appointment of Mr. Samuel Adom Botchway as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.
Some executives of CLOGSAG have strongly opposed Mr. Botchway’s appointment, citing his status as a politically exposed person, and insisting that his presence in the role compromises the neutrality of the civil service.
However, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye, addressing the press in Accra on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, said CLOGSAG has not provided any legal justification for its demands, making the basis for the strike questionable.
While acknowledging the concerns raised by CLOGSAG, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye strongly defended the government’s decision, stating that Mr. Botchway’s appointment remains valid and lawful.
“The president has acted per Ghanaian law, and until the law is revoked or a judicial determination made to a pending case, the President’s decision remains valid,” the government spokesperson said.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu has, therefore urged CLOGSAG to reconsider its planned industrial action and instead opt for further dialogue with the government to resolve the issue.
Despite the ongoing standoff, the government has reaffirmed its willingness to engage with CLOGSAG to address their grievances through negotiations rather than industrial action.
