The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority has commissioned a new multi purpose vessel to enhance the operational capabilities of Ghana’s Ports and ensure safety and sustainability of its maritime domain. The 470tonnes high performance vessel is named after a former Director of Port Mr. Gordon Anim who served in Tema and Takoradi for 35years and is credited to have led a number of transformations at the port.
For the past few years Ghana has made significant investments into the expansion of both the Tema and Takoradi ports. As a result the country’s port is becoming a preferred port for many businesses and to our neighbouring landlocked countries. The expansion has also brought with it some of the largest vessels calling at the port. To further position the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to address environmental and operational challenges effectively while improving safety and efficiency across the Ports of Tema, Takoradi, and all fishing harbours.
GPHA contracted Yutek Ship Building Company in Turkey to build the Multi-Purpose Vessel. The Multi-Purpose vessel is a versatile asset designed to serve variety of critical functions essential for the smooth operation of Ghana’s maritime infrastructure. Among the services to be offered by the vessel includes Pollution Control, like oil spillage, Search and Rescue Operations, marine salvage, Maintenance and Repair, enhancing port security and also offering general support operations. The 470ton Bureau Veritas vessel comes with 12knots approximate speed, 2.40metre draft. The 10 persons crew capacity vessel also comes with Length overall of 34.30m.
The Multi-Purpose Vessel is named after Mr. Gordon Anim, a former Director at Tema and Takoradi ports. Mr. Anim is credited for a number of transformation at both Tema and Takoradi ports where he served for 35 years. At a brief ceremony to commission the vessel the Director of Tema Port Madam Sandra Opoku said the commissioning signifies not only an expansion of the ports capacity but also the readiness of the port to embrace the future of maritime trade with advance technology and sustainable practices. Madam Opoku added that naming the vessel after Mr Gordon Anim is an acknowledgement of his contribution to the port.
The honouree, Mr Gordon Anim was was full of praise for the recognising and acknowledgement and thanked management of GPHA for rewarding his contribution to the maritime sector in Ghana.
