GBC’s Eastern Regional Correspondent Michael Kofi Kenetey was at the launch and has filed this report.
Green Ghana Day was marked in the Eastern Region with a float through the principal street of Koforidua. It was meant to increase awareness and sensitize the public on the need for planting trees.
Speaking on the theme “Mobilizing for a Greener Future”, the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong called on the various institutions such as the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Ghana Cocoa Board, the Environmental Protection Agency to support the ”vision of planting tree seedlings across the region and the country success”.
The Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, Nana Opoku Bosompem noted that trees are very important to human life and there is the need to have trees around us. Mr. Bosompem noted that the country is really embarking on a green Ghana revolution.
The Regional Director of Forest Service Division, Edith Abrokwa noted that the two point five million tree seedlings to be planted were shared among the seven forest districts.
The Municipal Chief Executive of New Juaben South, Isaac Apau-Gyasi noted that ”human activities such as degradation, illegal mining, deforestation and ineffective afforestation programmes have contributed to the depleting of Ghana ‘s forest reserves”.
It is, therefore, appropriate to devise aggressive ways to restore the lost forest reserves.
