The Ghana Water Company Limited, GWCL in the Central Region has attributed recent water supply challenges in Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding communities to the activities of illegal mining (galamsey).
In a press statement signed by management on August 30, 2024, the company explained that the supply gap is due to inadequate raw water received at the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant, resulting from galamsey activities.
The statement revealed that pollution of the Pra River, particularly at the catchment area for abstraction, has reduced water intake to a bare minimum.
“About sixty percent of the catchment capacity is silted due to illegal mining, compromising water quality. We are currently recording an average turbidity of 14,000 NTU, far exceeding the designed level of 2000 NTU for adequate treatment.”
The company acknowledged the severe inconvenience caused to customers and consumers, expressing regret for the situation.
They assured that they are engaging all stakeholders to find a lasting solution to address the issue.
