2024 IDEC: President Akufo-Addo calls for comprehensive strategy to address security challenges in Africa

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for a comprehensive strategy to address the diverse security challenges facing Africa.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Second International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEC) 2024, held at the Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters, President Nana Addo outlined  seven strategies to enhance regional mechanisms for addressing contemporary security challenges.

He first proposed strengthening intelligence sharing and coordination. He noted that effective intelligence sharing  and coordination among African nations are crucial for preempting and responding to security threats. 

He therefore called for the establishment of robust mechanisms for intelligence sharing at the regional and continental levels, leveraging modern technology to enhance real-time communication and data exchange.

Secondly, building capacity for strengthening and counterterrorism operations. This includes providing training, equipment, and logistical  support to  troops.

The third is  constituting the ECOWAS Standby Force. The establishment of this force  is essential for maintaining regional stability and security. It will enable ECOWAS to respond  swiftly and effectively to threats, uphold democratic governance, and promote peace across West Africa. 

The second edition of the International  Defense Exhibition and Conference IDEC 2024, is a platform that brings together key stakeholders  in the defense and security sector to deliberate on issues that are critical to the peace and stability of the continent of Africa. It is being hosted by the military high command of the  Ghana Armed Forces  in partnership with  Great Minds Defense Company and the Gulf of Guinea Maritime Institution. 

The fourth strategy is enhancing maritime security. He noted that Africa’s vast coastline and maritime resources are a critical part of our economic development.

He called for enhanced maritime security capabilities to protect these resources  from illegal activities. Fifth is , promoting cybersecurity resilience. This includes developing national cybersecurity strategies, establishing cyber incident response teams, and fostering  public-private partnerships to enhance cyber defense capabilities.

Cybersecurity awareness and education should be a priority, ensuring that  citizens and institutions are equipped (to protect themselves against cyber threats. Six, is  addressing climate-induced security risks.  He advocated the  integration of  climate security considerations into our national and regional security strategies. 

The last fostering inclusive  governance and development. He called for a united regional approach to tackle the growing security challenges facing Africa.

The event, which brought together defence and security experts from across the continent, focused on Enhancing Regional Mechanisms for addressing contemporary security challenges in Africa.
