The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has formed a special team to investigate deaths linked to Ghana’s 2020 and 2024 elections. This follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, who called for a thorough probe into the fatalities.

The investigation team, led by Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe, is based at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters. According to reports, the team has been given strict timelines to deliver a detailed report.

Dr. Dampare assured President Mahama that the Police Service will provide all the resources needed for the team to succeed. He also noted that the investigation will build on efforts started under his leadership since he became IGP in 2021.

One of the key initiatives during Dr. Dampare’s tenure is the establishment of a Cold Case Unit at the CID headquarters. This unit has been working on unresolved cases, including those from the 2020 elections. Reports suggest significant progress has been made, with some suspects already facing prosecution.

President Mahama, in a letter dated January 10, 2025, urged the police to prioritise these investigations to ensure justice for the victims and their families.

This move comes amid public concerns about violence during elections in Ghana. Many hope the findings will bring closure to the affected families and help prevent future election-related deaths.
