The Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, has urged journalists in the Northern region to rise above their ethnic, religious, and tribal interests and be professional in the discharge of their duties.
He said that, as professionals, they have a critical role in helping their audience focus on the collective interest instead of parochial interests that have the tendency to mar nationhood.
Professor Amin Alhassan was speaking at a sensitisation workshop on conflict-sensitive reporting in Tamale. The workshop was organised by the Northern Regional Peace Council in partnership with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) following rising tensions among some ethnic groups in the region.
Alhaji Abdul Razak Sani, who is a member of the Regional Peace Council, noted that though the media has helped in the development of the nation, including the northern region, it also has the potential to be used for mischievous purposes.
He, therefore, encouraged journalists and media practitioners in the region to be bold and resist attempts by warmongers to use the media to foment trouble.
The Director Genereral of the GBC, Professor Amin Alhassan, who was the lead facilitator at the workshop, challenged journalists to remain true to their profession and use the media to construct a better society that is tolerant of diversity and forges unity.
