In the wake of attacks on Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga’s residence, Inspector General of Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu has urged the youth of Bawku to disarm and support ongoing efforts to restore peace in the area.

During his visit on Friday, the IGP expressed his desire to spend at least three days in Bawku without hearing gunfire—something he said would signal that the youth had truly embraced his message of peace.

His visit comes in the wake of heightened tensions after unidentified individuals, believed to be youth from the area, partially set fire to Ayariga’s residence. The incident has further deepened insecurity in a region already grappling with protracted violence.

He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the youth and the police in achieving peace, assuring the youth that they would be given priority in special recruitment if they cease hostilities.

According to him, the Police were scared to do their work after tensions rose but he assured them that he would talk to his brothers and sisters to see reason with them.

‘’Forgive us and let us know where we have gone wrong and we will correct it ‘’, he said.

The IGP’s visit aims to address the longstanding chieftaincy conflict in Bawku and find a lasting solution to the violence. By engaging directly with the youth, he hopes to bring about a peaceful resolution and create a more stable environment for investment and development.

His visit falls on the back of some violence between the youth and police in Bawku some days ago. The IGP led a team there today to attain first-hand knowledge and assess the security situation on the ground.
