Former President John Dramani Mahama has called on government to provide compensation to all persons affected by last Tuesday’s action by the military in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.
He described the situation as potentially inflammatory and prayed for peace and harmony.
Mr. Mahama, in a statement, said government and state institutions must step in immediately to address the issue between residents of Ashaiman and the Ghana Armed Forces, including adequate compensation for all persons affected.
He said the coordinated, sanctioned operation, according to the military high command, was to fish out persons behind the gruesome murder of a military officer on Saturday, March 4. Mr. Mahama expressed sadness and regret over the death of the army officer.
But urged the military to exercise restraint and allow due process to take the course. He called for a full-scale investigation to apprehend, prosecute and punish the perpetrators of the dastardly act.
The military must, therefore, refrain from meting out extra-judicial justice on people.
