An Accra-based Gender Violence Court has remanded 29-year-old fisherman, Nii Baah Afful, into police custody following his involvement in a domestic assault case that recently went viral on social media.
According to a press release from the Ghana Police Service, dated March 25, 2025, Afful has been remanded for two weeks and is expected to reappear before the court on April 9, 2025.
Afful was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command in connection with a widely circulated video that showed him physically assaulting a woman carrying an eight-month-old baby.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday, March 20, 2025, at Korle Gonno, reportedly stemmed from a misunderstanding between the couple.
Police investigations identified the victim as 21-year-old Francisca Aryee, who shares two children with the suspect.
According to the police statement, Aryee was attempting to leave for her mother’s house when Afful pursued and assaulted her.
Following the video’s circulation, the Police Intelligence Unit of the Accra Region moved swiftly to apprehend Afful. He was arrested on Friday, March 22, 2025, at approximately 5pm and remains in custody as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, authorities have ensured that the victim has been located and is receiving necessary medical care and counselling.
The press release, signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng of the Public Affairs Directorate, Accra Region, reaffirmed the police service’s commitment to addressing domestic violence.
“The swift action taken by the Accra Regional Police Command demonstrates its commitment to ensuring justice and safety for all citizens,” the statement read.
The case has sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many calling for stronger measures to combat domestic violence in Ghana.
