The Regional Engagement Specialist at the US Embassy, Liza M. Steger, has highlighted the media’s vital role in shaping public opinion and impacting the electoral process.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement dubbed “Journalists for Peaceful Discourse” project, organized by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in collaboration with the US Embassy, on August 28,2024, Liza Steger stressed that the media plays a pivotal role in maintaining peace and should therefore be mindful of its publications.

Steger advised journalists to be mindful of their words, as they have power and that must be used wisely.

She emphasized the importance of prioritizing accuracy over sensationalism, context over controversy, and nuance over noise. she encouraged journalists to create platforms for constructive dialogue, amplify marginalized voices, and hold leaders accountable.

She cautioned journalists against the use of clickbait headlines and the spread of unsubstantiated claims, and called on the media prioritize educating and informing the public.

“Together, we can cultivate a media environment that informs, educates, and inspires, fostering peace, understanding, and democratic values.”
