Melcom to launch award in ethical journalism to immortalize legacies of Godwin Avenorgbo

The Melcom Group of Companies is to introduce an award category on the flagship annual GJA award scheme to reward journalists who excel in the areas of upholding ethics in journalism.

This is to commemorate the enduring legacy of its late Director of Communication, Godwin Avenorgbo.

General Manager Francis Sam, made this known in an exclusive interview with GBCNEWS in Accra, as the country prepares for his funeral on Saturday.

Mr. Sam, hinted that the Melcom Group will also institute a scholarship scheme for journalism students’ under its Melcom Cares Foundation initiative which was spearheaded by the late Godwin Avenorgbor.

The initiative aims to encourage up-and-coming journalists to uphold the highest standards of ethics and integrity in their work, while also ensuring that his contributions to the field are remembered for generations to come.

“Mr. Godwin’s work and his professionalism and what the journalism profession meant to him, Melcom’s management team is in the talks to institute a scholarship for a journalism student. Also Melcom is in talks to institute an award for the best journalist or the outstanding journalist of the year also in the name of Mr. Godwin Avenorgbo with the GJA going forward.

Mr. Sam added “these are all things in the pipeline that we hope to initiate so that we don’t forget the good work that Mr. Godwin did during his time with us and also for Mother Ghana in general.”

He eulogized him as a man whose unique style of communication always created harmony, both within the corporate and the public realm.

 “He was very effective in communicating ideas in such a way that it was easy for the general public to understand and respect and accept.  He was also receptive to addressing the questions that came from media and the general public and conveying the Melcom position in a very positive and receptive manner.”

Mr. Sam, expressed profound condolences to the bereaved family, friends, colleagues and the media fraternity for the loss. He said legacies he left behind would continue to be a shining example.
