MTN Ghana, one of the largest data and mobile money service providers in Ghana has officially announced that the 1% Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) has been abolished.
The telecommunications company confirmed the removal of the levy in a message sent to its customers on April 3, 2025, assuring them that all MoMo transactions will now be processed without E-Levy deductions.
“Y’ello Valued Customer, the 1% Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) has been abolished and no longer applies to your MoMo transactions. Enjoy seamless transfers with no E-Levy charges. Just MoMo it!” the message read.

The announcement follows the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) directive that all financial institutions and electronic payment service providers cease the application of the E-Levy effective April 2, 2025. This decision aligns with the Mahama led administration’s new tax reforms, which aim to ease financial burdens on citizens and encourage digital transactions.
Many Ghanaians have expressed their excitement over the removal of the levy, as the cost of transferring money electronically had been a major concern for businesses and individuals alike. The abolition of the e-levy they believe will help boost mobile money usage, which had declined since the E-Levy was introduced.
The E-Levy, which was initially introduced in 2022, attracted significant public criticism, with many arguing that it discouraged digital financial transactions. However, with its repeal, financial analysts predict a surge in mobile money transactions as users take advantage of the reduced costs.
Meanwhile, the GRA has instructed all charging entities to refund any E-Levy deductions made after April 2, warning of strict penalties for non-compliance. Customers are advised to monitor their transactions and report any discrepancies to their respective service providers.
