The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has announced the revival of the National Sanitation Day and the Cleanest City Award to enhance environmental cleanliness in the region. This initiative, introduced during her first engagement with the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, aligns with the National Democratic Congress’s “Clean Up Ghana” agenda.
Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo stated that a Regional Sanitation Day will be observed on the last Friday of each month to encourage proper waste management. Her administration plans to implement a comprehensive sanitation policy that includes waste segregation and the provision of garbage bags and bins in public areas and residences. Additionally, she aims to strengthen the capacities of sanitation departments within the MMDAs to improve efficiency and promote social campaigns to educate citizens on proper sanitation practices.
She also expressed her commitment to enhancing local governance by collaborating with traditional authorities, religious organizations, and stakeholders. She intends to empower MMDAs to boost revenue generation for sustainable development while reinforcing sub-district structures for better participatory governance.
On security matters, the Regional Minister who chairs the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), pledged to work with security agencies to ensure peace and order. She also plans to improve street lighting across the region to enhance visibility and safety.
In terms of economic development, she aims to collaborate with MMDCEs to support local businesses, particularly women entrepreneurs, through partnerships with organizations like the Women’s Bank.
