The recent incident at Accra Academy, where a student subjected a junior to brutal flogging with a cutlass, is a stark reminder of deep-seated issues of violence and indiscipline that pervades our educational institutions.
This act is not only a gross violation of the victim’s rights, but also a manifestation of a broader systemic failure, that demands comprehensive examination and intervention. The use of a cutlass, a tool intended for agricultural purposes, as an instrument of punishment is both alarming and indicative of a profound moral and ethical lapse. Such actions can result in severe physical injuries, psychological trauma and in extreme cases, fatalities. For instance, in 2015, a student from Effiduase Senior High School in the Ashanti Region, died from cutlass wounds inflicted during a punishment.
Similarly in 2011, two Accra Academy students were arrested for robbing a boutique in Dzorwulu, during which they threatened the attendant with cutlasses and a locally manufactured pistol. These incidents underscores the potential dangers and misuse of such weapons within the student community, leading to grievous consequences. This incident brings to the forefront the critical importance of instilling moral values, discipline and ethical behaviour in students. Literature has long explored the consequences of unchecked aggression and the erosion of moral compasses.
A British novelist, playwright and poet, William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies,” serves as a poignant example, illustrating how, in the absence of societal norms and guidance, individuals can descend into barbarism. The novel portrays the harrowing outcomes when young boys on an uninhabited island abandon their moral constraints, leading to violence and chaos. Golding’s narrative delves into the inherent savagery within humanity, a theme that remains relevant as we confront such incidents in our educational institutions today. The act of a senior student inflicting such brutal punishment on a junior is a violation of the principles of respect, empathy and responsibility, that educational institutions strive to impart. It reflects a failure, not only on the part of the individual, but also within the broader school community, including educators, administrators and parents.
This incident is not an isolated one; but symptomatic of a culture, that, if left unchecked, can perpetuate cycles of violence and indiscipline. In response to this incident, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a statement expressing deep concern and affirming its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students. The GES has pledged to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and implement appropriate sanctions to prevent such occurrences in the future. This collaborative approach tells of the seriousness of the situation and the collective resolve to address it. The police have assured the public of a meticulous inquiry to ascertain the facts and hold those responsible for this egregious act accountable. This investigation is crucial not only for delivering justice to the victim, but also for deterring future occurrences of such reprehensible behaviour. It is imperative to establish and enforce clear policies against all forms of violence and bullying within educational institutions.
Regular workshops on conflict resolution, empathy and the importance of upholding moral values should be conducted. Teachers must remain vigilant and approachable, creating an environment where students feel safe to report any incidents of bullying or violence and all untoward or Inappropriate act. Furthermore, incorporating moral and ethical education into the curriculum can play a pivotal role in shaping the character and behaviour of students.
Students must understand, that true leadership and respect are earned through kindness, integrity and setting positive examples not through intimidation or violence. Peer mentoring programmes can be effective in fostering a culture of mutual respect and support among students. Encouraging open dialogues about the consequences of violence and the importance of empathy can also contribute to a more harmonious school environment.
Parents should engage in open discussions with their children about their daily experiences and the importance of treating others with respect and dignity. Collaborating with schools to ensure a consistent message against violence should be communicated and collaborated both at home and in educational settings, to reinforce positive behaviour. It is a shared responsibility that requires the concerted efforts of all stakeholders in education, to instil the values necessary for our youth to thrive as responsible and ethical members of society.
