The Student Representative Council (SRC) of the Oyoko Methodist Senior High School (OMESS), as part of their SRC week celebration, has donated items worth GH¢ 7,000 to the inmates of the Koforidua Prisons.
The items include bags of rice, sugar, gari, bags of pure water, and toiletries.
The Public Relations Officer of the Koforidua Prisons, ASP Ezekiel Korlettey, who received the items on behalf of the management, denied speculations by a section of the public that donations received were not properly disbursed to the inmates.
ASP Korlettey, however, observed that the amount the inmates are fed is woefully inadequate, hence the donations come in handy.
“We use these to support the government’s efforts in feeding the inmates,” he stated.
ASP Korlettey, therefore, commended the students for using their widows’ mite to purchase the items for donations and asked other organizations, philanthropists, and NGOs to emulate them.
The Patron of OMESS SRC, Rev. Michael Kwakwah Sarpong, observed that most of the students behave in a way that they do not know could end up in prison. Thus, the motive of transporting them to the prisons for the donation is to expose them to crime-related offences and how this can distort their future after being jailed.
The Girls Senior Prefect who doubles as the SRC President for the school, Linda Daisy Adams, noted that the SRC solicited funds from individuals, the Methodist church, students, corporate organizations, and NGOs, among others.
