The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has approved an 11.71% tariff increase which takes effect from the first of next month (July 1).

This is for the recovery of total electricity revenue requirement for the regulated electricity market.

A statement issued by the Commission indicates that the key objective of the tariff review is to sustain the financial viability of utility service providers as well as ensure delivery of quality service to consumers.

As a major policy shift, aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of Ghanaian industries, the Commission has eliminated the Maximum Demand Charge on industrial customers, that is the Special Load Tariff-SLT Customers

The move, the Commission noted is expected to result in some SLT customers experiencing savings in their electricity bills.

It says 2019-2020 Major Tariff Review Decision is the outcome or prudent cost review and effective monitoring undertaken by the Commission.

The statement further explained that prior to the decision, the Commission received and considered tariff proposals from stakeholders including VRA, GRIDCo, PDS, NEDCo and Enclave Power Company Limited, EPC.

It says the Commission also received a tariff proposal from the Ghana Water Company Limited and a decision on it will be announced in due course.

The Commission reiterates its commitment to ensuring the sustainability and growth of quality electricity and water service provision for Socio-Economic development.
