A newly formed socio-political movement, Mental Revolution Movement, MRM, has asked the government to, as a matter of serious concern, respect the human rights and freedoms on citizens as enshrined in the Constitution.
The Movement has observed with regret the high cases of intimidations and incarceration of especially critical voices including the media by government or it’s functionaries in recent times.
It cautioned that, as a democracy, Ghana must be ruled by law but not tyranny since there cannot be a democracy without dissenting voices.
“The democratic path we have chosen for ourselves as a country must be kept going by our leaders, citizens and stakeholders.”
“A major threat to our democracy arises when leaders do not create opportunities for citizens.”
“The coup d’tats in the West African sub region in recent times should be a source of concern for our leaders, and must work hard to protect and consolidate our democracy”, MRM noted.
Addressing the media in Kumasi to coincide with the official launch of the MRM, it’s Founder and Leader, Abraham Abraham Aryeetey, noted that, the leadership being experienced by the citizens is short of the aspirations of the forebears especially the founding President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who expressed high hopes that, ‘the Blackman was capable of managing his own affairs’ on the date of formal declaration of Ghana as a politically independent state.
According to Mr. Aryeetey, as Ghanaians yearn for a leadership that inspires hope, prosperity, socio-economic advancement to rub shoulders with her contemporaries like Singapore, South Korea and Malaysia, what they are rather experiencing are leaders who are rather prioritizing amassing of wealth and management of the abundant natural resources.
“The wanton dissipation of the nation’s resources and public funds must be resisted by all the citizenry”, he urged voices of conscience.
The MRM founder is calling on the government to turn the leadership shortfall around to deliver significant development for the benefit of all.
Mr. Aryeetey noted that, the major factor needed for the transformation and socio-economic development not only in Ghana but throughout Africa is a positive mental revolution to raise the required consciousness for a change in all aspects of life including that of leadership and governance.
