Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, Mr. Governs Kwame Agbodza, has hinted at the reinstatement of road tolls, which were arbitrarily cancelled by the Akufo-Addo government.

He announced that plans are being put in place to digitise the collection process of tolls.

Speaking during his vetting before members of the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 20, 2025, Mr. Agbodza emphasised the importance of having a road toll collection policy.

He noted that he, along with other members of his caucus, had warned the previous government against cancelling the road toll system but was ignored.

Mr. Agbodza announced that a digital strategy would be adopted to collect tolls, saying such a system would enhance transparency.

“Yes, the road toll is coming back but not in the form of building obstructions on the road for drivers to stop and somebody taking money from them. It will be coming back based on a technological platform that makes it fair and easy to collect. Easy to account for and for the public to know what the money is being used for.

Together with the technocrats at the road ministry, we will come up with a policy as to how that will be done,” he assured members of the committee.
