The University for Development Studies (UDS), will on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, set up a committee to investigate the cause of the collapse of the 6-storey building at the city campus of the University in Tamale.

The Committee will also examine the structural integrity of an uncompleted-storey building adjacent to the collapsed building.

The two structures were being constructed from the university’s internally generated funds as part of efforts to address infrastructural challenges facing the school.

The Director of Communications of the UDS, Abdul Hayi Moomen, disclosed this after the Management of the University,  led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Seidu Al-hassan, visited the site of the collapsed building to ascertain the extent of damage on Monday.

“The committee will comprise people who are experts in the area of construction and will be tasked to come up with a report in the shortest possible time. A report that will look into the cause of the collapse of that building. The report is also expected to make recommendations as to the structural integrity of the remaining building,” he revealed.

Earlier in the day, the Northern Regional Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) also visited the site for assessment.

Mr. Abdul Hayi Moomen disclosed that the collapsed building was meant for lecture halls and office accommodation.

“There were huge lecture halls in there, lecture halls that had sitting capacities of up to three hundred and forty, some of the lecture halls one hundred and fifty, there were a few offices expected to be in there as well, unfortunately, all that is gone,” Mr. Moomen disclosed.

The uncompleted six storey building collapsed on Saturday after a heavy downpour. No casualties were recorded.
