Ghana’s Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, is making steady progress in her recovery following a health scare on March 28, 2025. The Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has reassured the public about her condition, dismissing unfounded rumors circulating on social media platforms.

Speaking to Ghanaians in Lagos, Nigeria on April 6, Mr Ablakwa emphasized the positive impact of public support.

“I want to assure you that she is doing very, very well. Your prayers worked, your prayers from all of us, Ghanaians at home and abroad, have really worked.”

The Vice President initially received treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre before seeking further medical attention abroad, as recommended by experts. Mr Ablakwa, having personally communicated with Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, confidently stated:

“I have heard from her, so I know what I am talking about, and she’s doing well.”

The Foreign Minister strongly condemned the spread of misinformation, describing it as “vicious and un-Ghanaian evil propaganda.” He urged the public to focus instead on the Vice President’s resilience and her role as an inspiration, particularly for young women.

“Our mother is doing very, very well, and very soon she is going to return to her duties, serving Ghana, making all of you proud and particularly inspiring our young girls, our daughters, to know that there is nothing our women cannot achieve.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s first female Vice President, has commenced a three-week medical leave as of April 7, 2025, with expectations of resuming her official duties upon her return.

Her recovery and imminent return to office stand as a testament to her strength and the support of the Ghanaian people.
