From the 1st to the 2nd of June, 2021, regional and national heads of media organizations across the continents will meet in Accra for the 2021 conference of the Federation of African Journalists.
Ahead of the conference, some members of the team paid a courtesy call on the management of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, detailing the essence of the conference.
Issues to engage the practitioners are improving the working conditions of journalists and media freedom.
The Director-General of the GBC, Prof. Amin Alhassan emphasized that poor working conditions of journalists is a threat to democracy.
Across the continent, it is believed that the safety of journalists and their working conditions is deteriorating.
Also, concerns about the impact of Covid-19 on employment, media freedom which is the essence of the profession is said to be under threat, while concerns of fake news and misinformation keeps rising, putting a dent on democracies by relentless targeting of hyper-partisan views, among others.
The conference offers a common platform to share continental ideas and experiences.
Reacting to issues tabled for discussion at the conference, the Director – General of GBC Prof. Amin Alhassan championed the importance of the public service media in a developing democracy.
He said it is time for journalists’ unions to speak up. Prof. Alhassan said poor working conditions are a threat to democracy.
