A total of one hundred and fifteen thousand, two hundred and forty prospective national service personnel will from today November 1, commence undertaking their mandatory National Service for the 2022/2023 service year.
National service, which is mandatory gives fresh graduates hands on training after tertiary education.
Speaking to GBCGHANAONLINE on their expectations as they begin the journey today, some service personnel hoped, the one year practical attachment will give them the right footing in their careers.
Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Osei Assibey Antwi, encouraged service personnel to be good ambassadors of the scheme, and creates opportunities for themselves.
He said they should abide by code of ethics of their user agencies to enhanced their employability.
“You would have build yourself to be employable in that case you need to perfect your knowledge, by getting a lot of experience and now I will say that they should go there and be good ambassadors. They should go there and be disciplined and abide by the principles of all the user agencies”
Mr. Assibey-Antwi who was speaking in an inter agencies said his outfit is working with the presidency for an increase in allowance of personnel
“Oliver always asked for more, so we are hoping that the President will do something about it. Maybe you have heard the President gave COLA to support the workers and once the president has started it will also come to their turn”

A prospective who did not want the identity disclosed said “I sometimes hear that national service personnel go to work and have nothing to do, so I hope I will have something productive to do”
Another person who had been posted to the Lands Commission, was happy the one year service period will give him practical knowledge on what he studied in school
Maame Yaa Prempeh who studied at the Accra School of Hygiene said she will work hard in order to secure permanent employment at their user institutions
“My expectation is to meet friendly professional to open up and teach us all that we need to know. We also hope that at the end of everything if they find our work diligent, they will consider retaining us” she said.
