250 Ghanaians are expected to arrive in Accra today from the United Arab Emirates, UAE.
Briefing journalists in Accra, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Shirley Ayorkor Botchway said a total of 856 stranded Ghanaians abroad have so far been evacuated back home. Another batch of more than 600 persons are expected to be evacuated by the end of the month.
Madam Ayorkor Botchway giving a breakdown of persons evacuated so far said a batch of four hundred persons and another one hundred and 95 are also expected to be evacuated from Lebanon and Dubai.
She said government is committed to ensuring that all those who have made pleas to return home are assisted.
The Minister who could not tell how much the government has so far spent on the evacuation expressed worry about the cost of hotel for quarantine and says the cost is a huge concern to the COVID-19 response team.
Meanwhile, Ghanaians stranded in the US are expected to arrive in Accra on June 25, following a successful registration exercise.
A letter issued by the Ghana Consulate in New York, says those to be repatriated will pay their cost of travel, and there will be a pre-boarding screening for all persons before departure. Evacuees will also be required to provide their Personal Protective Equipment, of face masks and hand sanitizers.
The statement adds that there will be a 14-day mandatory quarantine at cost to the returnees upon arrival in Accra, with the possibility of a 21-day extension.
