The third edition of the Regional Energy Commission’s Senior High Schools(SHS) Renewable Energy Challenge has been held at Oyoko Methodist SHS at Oyoko in the New Juaben North Municipality of the Eastern Region to help promote the efficient use of electricity and renewable energy resources.
The Executive Secretary of Energy Commission, Ing. Oscar Amonoo-Neizer said in order to strengthen the use of renewable energy, public education must be enhanced and also facilitate the main stream of renewable energy and energy efficiency technology programmes in the curriculum of second cycle institutions.
He entreated stakeholders in the educational sector prioritized research and encourage the transformation of ideas and concepts into actual projects and products developments.
The Abuakwa North Municipal Director of Education Abena Gyamera charged school authorities to make the learning of renewable energy easy and attractive to enable students develop the passion in solving renewable energy and climate change related issues.
She added that these issues can be resolve if the teaching and learning of science become practical with high concentration in project developments.
The Memfi Methodist Girls Senior High School, MEGISS, won the competition while Ofori Penin SHS placed second and Pope John SHS and Minor Seminary took the third position.
The leader of the MEGISS team Emzera Ayesu spoke to GBC about their project and what it seeks to achieve.
The competition was on the theme “Clean Cooking and Food Processing using Renewable Energy Technologies.”
Other schools who participated in the competition were Okuapeman SHS, Saviour SHS, Koforidua Technical Institute and Begoro PRESEC.
