Nine haulage trucks loading boulders around the Anankore River at Sofokrom in the Western Region have been seized together with three water pumps, one generator and six car batteries by the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly and the Metropolitan Environmental Protection Agency, for indulging in illegal activities around the Anankore river.

The operations of the assembly came 24 hours after the Ghana Water company limited spoke on how activities of a quarry were contributing to acute water shortage that has hit the metropolis.

The Anankore River which is the main source of water supply for the Ghana Water Company’s treatment plant at Inchaban has been blocked by the activities of the quarry for months.

For this reason, the level of raw water for treatment has gone down considerably and in turn affected water supply for both residential and industrial use within the region.

After media reports on the development, following a trip to the site, the Chief Executive of the Sekondi –Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, Anthony Sam, expressed shock at the level of destruction and ordered the seizure of the equipment.

He said the construction firm will be dealt with appropriately. All the seized trucks have been assembled at the metro urban roads office.
