The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has been summoned to appear before Parliament on Friday, February 28, 2025, to address concerns regarding the recent deportation of Ghanaian nationals from the United States.
Members of Parliament are pressing the government to provide assistance to the affected individuals and implement strategies to regulate migration effectively.
The request for the minister’s appearance was initiated by the Assin South MP, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, who voiced concerns about the treatment of Ghanaians in US detention facilities.
During a parliamentary session on Friday, February 21, Reverend Fordjour also advocated for the creation of reintegration centres to help returnees adjust to life in Ghana.
“What is particularly alarming about these deportations is not just the scale but the harsh conditions our citizens endure in US detention centres before being forcibly removed. Reports indicate that many face degrading treatment,” he stated.
He further stressed that some deportees have spent most of their lives in the United States and may struggle to reintegrate without proper support. He urged the government to establish structured reintegration programs, including job placement initiatives, to assist affected individuals in rebuilding their lives.
