During his working visit to Nigeria, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, was warmly received by Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar. The meeting underscored the deep ties between Ghana and Nigeria and focused on key regional and continental priorities.

Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa described the reception as “brotherly,” emphasizing the longstanding relationship between the two nations. “We deeply cherish the outstanding relations between Ghana and Nigeria, which continue to grow stronger with each engagement,” he noted.

The discussions centered on follow-up actions regarding the African Energy Strategy (AES) and ECOWAS matters. Hon. Ablakwa highlighted President Mahama’s recent shuttle diplomacy to Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso as pivotal in addressing regional challenges. “President Mahama’s efforts have laid a solid foundation for resolving these vexed matters, and our meeting today was essential to advancing those initiatives,” he said.

Trade and job creation within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework were also deliberated. Ambassador Tuggar stressed the importance of AfCFTA in fostering economic growth across Africa. “AfCFTA is a game-changer for our continent, and we must leverage it to create jobs and enhance trade,” he remarked.

Pan-African projects such as the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline and the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway were highlighted as transformative initiatives. Hon. Ablakwa noted, “These projects are not just infrastructure; they symbolize unity and shared progress for Africa.”

Preparations for ECOWAS@50 celebrations were another key topic. Hon. Ablakwa revealed that Ghana would host the commemoration launch later this month with President Mahama leading the event. “This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on our achievements and renew our commitment to regional integration,” he stated.

Ambassador Tuggar echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Nigeria’s dedication to ECOWAS’ vision. “Nigeria remains steadfast in its support for ECOWAS’ goals of peace, stability, and development,” he said.
