President Akufo-Addo has given assurance that his government will provide the necessary support to victims of the recent flood disaster in parts of the country that was occasioned by the recent spillage of the Akosombo Dam by the Volta River Authority.

He said as President, his foremost responsibility is to seek for the welfare of every Ghanaian, hence he will not relent on his resolve to rescue the displaced people from their predicament.

President Akufo Addo said this when he visited Mepe in the North Tongu District to commiserate with displaced residents.

The affected areas are river line communities along the Volta River in parts of the Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra Regions.

The National Disaster Management Organisation, (NADMO) estimates that over 22 thousand people have been displaced by the disaster in the Volta and Eastern Regions.

At Mepe, an epi centre of the disaster where President Akufo-Addo visited, over 10 thousand residents in the District are in dire need of assistance.

Currently, the flood levels in parts of the community have not yet receded and that has been a major concern to the victims who are eager to return to normalcy.

Power is still unavailable and there is insufficient drinking water days after the residents were displaced.

This has since impeded the socio-economic livelihoods of the people.

There are public health concerns.

This is due to overcrowding at the holding centers coupled with poor sanitation.

Some of the affected people in an interview with GBC News bemoaned that the relief items which have been disbursed by the National Disaster Management Organisation are woefully inadequate considering their numbers.

President Akufo Addo interacted with some of the displaced persons assuring them that the state will do everything to bring their lives to normalcy.

Earlier today, some members of the Inter-ministerial Committee set up by President Akufo Addo to coordinate government’s efforts to assist victims of the Akosombo spillage disaster begun their activities with a visit to Mepe.
