President Akufo-Addo steps up efforts at safe mining

President Akufo-Addo says government will not relent in its efforts to flush out individuals whose activities cause havoc to the environment, particularly the forest.

He said government will continue to deploy appropriate measures needed to help protect and safeguard the environment.

Speaking in Accra at the Inauguration of one hundred Mercury free mining processing equipment known as Gold Kacha, the President outlined government’s vision of ensuring safe and sustainable mining in Ghana.

He again assured the mining community that his government is not against small scale mining, but mining that destroys the environment.

The GoldKacha can also process sand, clay and hard rock. The modular nature of the mining machine allows for different modules to be added to expand as the need arises.

This allows the miners to gain a return on investment as the small scale miner expands.

The Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, noted that the government will not stop efforts in making Ghana the mining hub of Africa. He said the GoldKacha will ensure safe mining in Ghana.

President Akufo-Addo noted that the Gold Kacha has the capacity to ensure 90% of gold recovery through a mercury free process. He hinted of 300 more of the equipment will be acquired to support small scale miners.

President Akufo-Addo believes that the Gold Kacha equipment will help create more jobs while ensure sanity in the mining sector. He however cautioned individuals engaged in activities that threaten the environment to put a stop to it.
