Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as “Napo,” has resigned from his position as the Minister for Energy.

This decision comes after his nomination and confirmation as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate for the 2024 election this December.

The resignation aims to allow him to fully focus on his new role as the party strives to break the eight-year cycle.

In a statement issued by the presidency on Thursday, July 11, and signed by Communications Director Eugene Arhin, it said Dr Prempeh’s resignation will take effect from Thursday, July 18.

The statement also noted that President Akufo-Addo has accepted his resignation and expressed his gratitude for his dedication and service to the government.

Dr Prempeh’s departure marks a significant shift as he transitions to a key role in the NPP’s campaign efforts, emphasising his commitment to the party’s future success.

“The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has today, Thursday, 11th July 2024, accepted the resignation from the office of Hon. Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, as Minister for Energy, with effect from 18th July 2024. This decision has been made to enable Dr Opoku Prempeh to focus on his new role as the Vice-Presidential Candidate and Running Mate to the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.”

“His tenure as Minister for Education and as Minister for Energy has been marked by a stellar record of accomplishments and significant contributions to the education and energy sectors,” the statement from the presidency said.
