Alleged fake lawyer in secessionists trial pleads not guilty

Dennis Seyram Benson who has been arraigned for impersonating as a lawyer in the Volta secessionists case has pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him at the Kaneshie District Court in Accra.

He has been slapped with six charges three each of defrauding by false pretence and deceit of court by impersonation.

The Magistrate, Rosemond Agyiri Doudua however remanded him into police custody to reappear on the fourth of next month.

Prosecution led by Sylvester Asare said the accused person has appeared before the Circuit Court judges Emmanuel Esaandoh, Rosemary BaahTosu and Ama Adoma Kwakye, a magistrate at the Kaneshie District Court.

While praying for bail for his client, lawyer Redford Nii Nortey Lokko said his client is single but has persons within his family to stand sureties for him. The prosecution opposed to the bail application and said the accused person will interfere with witnesses should he be granted bail.

He argued that when granted bail the accused will tamper with their investigation and prayed that he should be remanded at police custody to assist the police. The court after listening to the parties refused the bail application and remanded the accused person.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Dennis Benson is a farmer and also a member of a secessionist group named Western Togoland Restoration Front. According to the prosecution, in September, this year, a group of the said WTRF was arrested with various offences including treason felony.

The prosecution said that since the arrest of the accused persons and subsequent arraignment before the court, notably the Circuit and the District Courts, the accused has been involved. He was mostly seen fully robbed among the defense team of the secessionist’s group in open court.

The demeanor of the accused both in court and outside court invited the suspicion of the police. Subsequently, the prosecution, said the police begun to investigate whether or not he is a lawyer.

Consequently, he was arrested at the Kaneshie District Court, when he appeared fully robbed before the court, announcing himself as the counsel for the accused persons.
