Ten street preachers and five persons engaged in the sale of products using public address system in the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra have been served notices by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for operating without a permit.
The notice issued by the Public Health Officers of the Assembly named excessive noise making as one of the public related offences that goes contrary to AMA Abatement of noise Bye-Law of 2017.
It was on this basis that Public Health stormed the CBD to enforce the said law.
The Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah who made the disclosure said per the Ghana Standards Protection Requirement for ambience noise control code GS 122 of 2018, the permissible noise level within commercial areas should be 75 decibels during the day and 65 decibels during the night.
Moreover, areas with residential, trading and light industrial activities should be 60 decibels during the day and 65 decibels during the night.
Under Section 9 of the same Bye-Law, public preachers are required to obtain preaching permit from the AMA to operate from 8 am to 10 am with adherence to the permissible noise level.
The law further inhibits religious institutions conducting service from playing or preaching in a manner that could cause disturbances to residents in an area, adding that, such services must be between 5 am to 10 pm.
