The Asogli Traditional Council in the Volta Region has reiterated its disapproval of government’s proposal to rename the Ho Technical University after Dr. Ephraim Amu.

The Council said it views the decision as unfortunate, misplaced, and disrespectful, considering that the traditional authorities of Ho have not been consulted.

At a press conference in Ho, the Warlord of Asogli, Togbe Adzie Lakle Howusu, said the Council rejects the move, which he said will jeopardise the progress and reputation of the University and lead to confusion among stakeholders.

The decision to rename the University came to light in February 2018 at the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the institution, when President Akufo-Addo endorsed the proposal by the Governing council.

The announcement faced backlash from the Asogli Traditional Council at the time for not being consulted, despite being custodians of the land.

Togbe Howusu said the Council has gathered information that the University’s authorities and government intend to reignite the decision to rename the institution after Ephraim Amu.

He noted that the Council’s concern is heightened by the fact that the proposed name does not align with the University in any way. He said the name of a University carries significant meaning and hence must have close ties to its history.

Togbe Howusu said that though the people of Asogli recognise the achievements of Dr Ephraim Amu and his contribution to the development of the country, his feats have limited connection with the Ho Technical University.

He said the people of Asogli have a strong attachment to the Ho Technical University and are proud of the brand, which is steadily gaining recognition both nationally and internationally.

Togbe Howusu therefore reminded authorities of the Ho Technical University that major decisions affecting the University should be made in consultation with relevant stakeholders, such as the Traditional Council, to avoid conflict and unnecessary confrontation.

He reaffirmed that the Council totally rejects and will oppose any attempt to rename the University saying that its name should remain Ho Technical University.

Some members of the Traditional Council, led by Togbe Howusu, paraded the streets of Ho to express their displeasure. They also presented their petition to the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa; the Ho Municipal Chief Executive, Divine Bosson; and the authorities of the Ho Technical University.

They were assured that the petition would be delivered to the appropriate quarters.
