SONABEL, the power utility company of Burkina Faso, has announced that it will commence the spillage of water from the Bagre Dam on Monday, August 19, 2024.

According to a statement signed by Jesse Kazapoe, Basin Director of the White Volta Basin Secretariat of the Water Resources Commission, the current water level of the dam has reached 232.8 meters and continues to rise.

The statement warned that the spillage is expected to cause the White Volta River in Ghana to overflow its banks and occupy its normal flood plains.

The Water Resources Commission was informed by SONABEL on Friday, August 16, 2024, that the water level in the Bagre Dam has been rising steadily since Friday, August 2, 2024.

The statement advised residents, particularly those living and working along the banks of the White Volta River, to take precautionary measures to avoid being adversely affected by the spillage.

It emphasised the need for further action related to flood management and promised to provide additional information as it becomes available.
