Following a recent attack in Bawku, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has reviewed the curfew hours imposed on Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region, effective Wednesday April 9.
According to the Minister, the new curfew hours are from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.
This decision was made based on the advice of the Upper East Regional Security Council and issued by Executive Instrument. The government is urging Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, the Youth, and all residents to exercise restraint in the face of current challenges and to use non-violent means to help maintain peace.
The Minister also announced a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons in the affected areas. He cautioned that anyone found with such items will be arrested and prosecuted.
The revised curfew follows a disturbing incident in which civilians reportedly attacked police personnel in Bawku. The incident resulted in the Divisional Commander’s residence and another home being set ablaze, along with a police pickup vehicle.
There were also exchanges of gunfire between the two sides during the confrontation.
