Thirty-three examination officials have been arrested for engaging in examination malpractices in the just-ended Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

Ten students in the Central Region were also arrested for taking mobile phones to the examination’s halls. In an interview with GBC News, Head of Public Affairs at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, said it is emerging that money exchanged hands between students and invigilators in some centres.

He said those arrested would be prosecuted.

Findings show that examination malpractices assume different dimensions in Ghana, including impersonation, syndicate cheating in schools, smuggling of mobile phones into examination halls by candidates, and restriction of access to school compounds for surveillance.

In the just-ended BECE, many well-meaning Ghanaians, including President Akufo-Addo, cautioned against all forms of examination malpractice.
