Poultry farmers in the Ashanti region have been urged to adopt strict biosecurity measures to avert contracting the Avian Flu on their farms. Fourteen poultry farms in the region have recorded new bird flu cases affecting about 30,000 birds between February and May.
The Regional Director of the Veterinary Services, Dr Marlon Mensah who disclosed this in an interview ahead of a programme to launch a new Alfa Premix Poultry Feed in Kumasi said his office in collaboration with the District Assemblies would soon begin depopulating the affected birds.
He said the disease has no cure but could be prevented through strict compliance of biosecurity.
Dr Mensah announced that a “team would be constituted to go round the farms to ensure they do not expose the farms to the deadly bird flu”.
A Nutrition Consultant and Head of the Technical Team of Boris B. Farms in Kumasi, David Quartey, said the government cannot continue to waste money to compensate farmers for their negligence.
“They should also adopt the new premix feed while recovering from the bird flu outbreak where the government spent over GHC 9.6 million to pay farmers who lost their birds to birds flu.”
