The Butchers Association in Bolgatanga is calling on the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, RCC and the Veterinary Services Department to lift the ban on the consumption of meat.

According to the butchers, they make lots of sales during the Ramadan period and the ban is affecting their business.

They are hopeful the ban will be lifted before Ramadan.

The butchers made the call after the RCC received some vaccines at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.

The Bolgatanga Abattoir was under lock and key when GBCNews visited. While some young butchers were relaxed and playing games, others took it cool under a shed. Secretary of the Butchers Association, Tembil Timothy in an interview said the ban on the consumption of meat has put them out of business and called for immediate lifting of the ban.

Some Muslims in the Municipality have also added their voices to the call, insisting that animal sacrifice is a ritual to be performed when observing Ramadan.

At the Regional Hospital, the Regional Minister and staff of the Veterinary Services Department received some vaccines delivered by Zipline, for vaccination throughout the region. The Regional Minister Mr. Stephen Yakubu, however, had some assurances for the butchers.

About one hundred thousand vaccines have been received and distributed to various Districts and Municipal Health Directorates for mass vaccination.

More than four thousand animals have so far been vaccinated.
