The Women in Broadcasting made up of women in the media industry in the Upper East Region has hit the streets of the Bongo Township with their message of campaign for peaceful elections.

This is the second time the group has embarked on the campaign for politicians and the general public to consider peace over war in their quest for power. The campaign took them to the chief’s palace, through to the market square, and the District Hospital.

They emphasized the importance of peaceful co-existence and encouraged the public to return home after casting their ballots on elections day. They carried placards that communicated the need to allow the Electoral Commission to carry out its duties on elections day.

A producer from Radio Gurune, a community based radio station in Bolgatanga Josephine Akaribo called for the election of leaders who promote harmony.

“Elect leaders who are care about peace and harmony in our communities. Political parties are for development and not violence. So please, on elections day, when you go and vote, just return home and allow the Electoral Commission to do their work. This country cannot develop when there is no peace.” She stressed.

Paramount Chief of the Bongo Tradtional Area, Baba Salifu Tamale Lemyarum expressed his appreciation for the women’s efforts, noting that politics in northern Ghana often fosters hatred rather than friendship. He urged the youth to avoid violence, stressing that conflict would only bring destruction to the people of Bongo and Ghana as a whole.

“Politics should not be a do or die affair. People from this part of the country see their colleagues as enemies just because they’re not same political party. It should not be that way. Ghana is a peaceful country and the youth must guard against it.”

The peace campaign by the Women in Broadcasting is expected to be replicated in other Districts across the Upper East Region before the end of December 2024
