British High Commissioner calls for unity and democracy at historic Fetu Afahyɛ festival

The British High Commissioner to Ghana says the festival reminds us of our common heritage and the collective desire for a prosperous future for all.

On a bright Saturday afternoon in the historic city of Cape Coast, the streets were alive with a celebration that brought together generations. The Fetu Afahyɛ Festival had arrived once more, a centuries-old tradition that celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the Fante people. This year, however, marked a particularly special occasion—60 years since the festival had been restored, after being silenced for decades during the colonial period.

Speaking at the festival today September 7, 2024, at the Jubilee Park in Cape Coast, H.E Harriet Thompson explained that, Fetu Afahyɛ is particularly significant for the people of Cape Coast, celebrating the resilience and unity of the people of Fante. She recognizes the festival’s historical importance and the complex relationship between Ghana and the United Kingdom, emphasizing that their presence at the festival symbolizes the strength of modern relations between the two nations.

She also highlighted the shared history and lasting bonds between UK and Ghana, which have evolved into a modern partnership built on trust and cooperation. She pointed out that, this relationship enables both countries to work together on pressing global issues, such as promoting and protecting democratic values. “Democracy is seen as a vital principle, ensuring that people have a say in their governance.

H.E Harriet Thompson reflected on the challenges of politics, particularly during election periods when divisions arise. However, they stress that political leadership should prioritize unity and the greater good, ensuring that democracy is not weakened by conflict. The Fetu Afahyɛ in its celebration of unity and peace, serves as a reminder of the shared heritage and collective hope for a prosperous future for all.

Additionally, she expressed deep gratitude for being invited to the Fetu Afahyɛ one of Ghana’s oldest traditional festivals, held in Cape Coast. She again acknowledged the importance of such festivals in preserving cultural heritage and strengthening community bonds.
