A former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko has refuted claims that the cancellation of Ghana’s power purchase agreement with GCGP Limited which has resulted in a $134 million judgment debt occurred under his tenure.
Speaking in an interview in Accra, he said at the time of cancellation he was not in office.
Mr. Boakye Agyarko said he is surprised that some people are linking the abrogation of the deal to him when he had no power to do so when he was the Minister at the time.
The GCGP contract was one of the emergency power purchase agreements entered into during the NDC administration to address the power crisis.
According to reports, President Akufo-Addo’s administration abrogated the deal with GCGP because the country was incurring losses from the agreement despite not needing the power from the company.
GCGP then went to seek redress from the International Court of Arbitration and the court reportedly ruled in favor of the company. The Court, therefore, slapped $134 million judgment debt on Ghana.
