A  Former Director General of the Mental Health Authority, Professor Akwesi Osei, says ”Ghana should hasten slowly in the cultivation of cannabis in large quantities”.

This is because if care is not taken, people will cultivate dangerous cannabis alongside the particular one needed for medicinal purposes due to lack of education on the various types of cannabis.

Professor Osei said proper public education and sensitisation should have gone ahead of the announcement to curtail several of the challenges the move is likely to cause.

He spoke on GBC’s Current Affairs Programme ‘FOCUS‘.

For his part, former MP for Ablekuma Central, Ebenezer Nartey, said a possible abuse of the drug may outweigh the economic gains if the move is not carefully monitored.

A Deputy National Organiser of the NDC, Elikem Kotoko, agreeed with his co-panelists, citing the economic projections made on the e-levy, which did not materialise. He said the country must not be excited about what the cultivation may rake in financially and relegate the overall social impact.
