The Paramount Chief of Aburi-Akuapim, Nana Otubour Djan Kwasi, has bemoaned the seeming apathy of Ghanaians in ensuring a clean environment.
He said rapid urbanisation has led man to destroy the vast flora and fauna that in the past adorned the landscape of Ghana.
He said keeping a green vegetation and clean water bodies are less costly than reclaiming them after destroying and so all must safeguard the environment in their own small way for sustenance of humanity.
Nana Otubour Djan Kwasi made these remarks when he launched the plant for now and future project during the celebration of this year’s world environment day at Aburi in the eastern region.
The Aburi-Akuapim Manhene, Nana Otubour Djan Kwasi, who was clearly distraught by the low participation of people at the event called on Ghanaians not to abuse the environment. He said Aburi has since time past been a toast around the world due to its lush landscape and hoped other cities will emulate.
The first lady Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo in a speech read on her behalf by the project director of the Rebecca Foundation, Daniel Kweku Kwakye said as climate change continues to threaten the world, Ghanaians must no longer be indifferent about the environment.
She said a first step is for all to plant a tree a year and care for it.
The wife of the Former Vice President, late Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, Mrs. Matilda Amissah-Arthur said our survival on earth is dependent on the environment and so the treatment given the world around us will reflect on our own.
The Acting Director of the Department Of Parks And Gardens, Charles Nii Ayittey Okine, gave an overview of the planting for now and future project.
The Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation And Rural Development, Dan Botwe in a speech read on his behalf urged metropolitan municipal and district assemblies to support the Department of Parks and Gardens with the needed funds and logistics so as to not only sustain the project but also ensure a green and beautiful Ghana always.
