The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu has called on all citizens to fulfil their tax obligations as a means of strengthening Ghana’s economy and reducing dependence on external support.

Speaking through his spokesperson, Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, during the 2025 Eid celebration at the Black Star Square in Accra, he emphasized the importance of internal revenue generation for national development.

“The Chief Imam has consistently expressed concerns about our economy and our obligations as citizens,” the spokesperson relayed. “He urges all of us to improve our internal revenue generation so that we can be self-sufficient and free from external pressures that may compromise our values.”

Highlighting the importance of financial independence, the Chief Imam stated that a nation that effectively collects and manages its taxes can avoid excessive borrowing and external influence. He encouraged individuals and businesses to fulfill their tax responsibilities as part of their civic duty.

“Whoever is engaged in any economic activity must honor their tax obligations,” he stressed. “This is our contribution to national growth and support for the leadership we have elected.”

The Chief Imam also addressed newly appointed government officials, urging them to serve with loyalty, humility, and dedication. He reminded them that their appointments are based on trust and competence and that they must execute their duties with integrity to support the vision of the president and the nation.

“Those appointed by the president must demonstrate commitment, loyalty, and hard work,” he advised. “They must avoid arrogance and work diligently to help the president fulfill his mandate.”

Additionally, the Chief Imam commended President John Mahama for his continuous support of the Muslim community in Ghana. He acknowledged the president’s efforts in promoting religious tolerance, improving infrastructure for Islamic education, and ensuring the welfare of Muslim communities across the country.

“We have witnessed significant interventions from the president that have positively impacted the Muslim community,” he noted. “From supporting Islamic schools to fostering religious harmony, his contributions are deeply appreciated.”

The sermon further encouraged the youth to uphold the virtues of Ramadan, including discipline, respect for the law, and consideration for others in their celebrations. He cautioned against reckless behaviour, particularly in public spaces, emphasizing that Islam promotes peace and order.

As the Muslim community marks Eid, His Eminence the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu urged all Ghanaians to reflect on the values of unity, charity, and responsible citizenship, reinforcing the message that economic stability begins with fulfilling one’s financial obligations to the state.
