The Christian Council of Ghana has welcomed the law that bans the declaration, accusation, naming, or labeling of another person as a witch.

The Council says it will be embarking on massive sensitization among Church Leaders, especially in rural areas for them to be abreast of the new law.

Parliament on July 27, 2023 amended the Criminal Offences Act to make it a crime to accuse someone of being a witch or engage in any practice as a Witch Doctor or Witch Finder.

Speaking to GBC News, the General Secretary of the Council, Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose, said, ‘the law has been long overdue because quite a number of people have suffered consequences of being accused of Witchcraft in the past”.

“I think it is a victory for human rights and human dignitaries in our dear nation Ghana. Because it has in the past had dire consequences on those people who have been accused,

I think the message will be sent through heads of churches and individual pastors, even in the remotest part of the country, that now it is an offence to make some of those loose statements”, he posited.
