The Government of Ghana, led by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and supported by the United Nations, has embarked on developing a framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation.
In a statement issued today, September 3, 2024, following the results of a national and local capacity assessment conducted in 2022 and presented in August 2024, the importance of developing comprehensive preparedness and response plans across sectors such as agriculture, energy, and social protection was emphasized. The report also underscored the need to address the disproportionate effects of climate change on vulnerable communities.
The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Director General, Hon. Eric Nana Agyemang Prempeh, emphasized that these findings would help shape Ghana’s National DRR Strategy in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. He also called on international partners, particularly the UN, to collaborate on implementing the recommendations.
Moreover, the UN Resident Coordinator, Charles Abani, highlighted the importance of self-resilience in Ghana’s approach to climate adaptation and stressed the need for infrastructure investments like the Pwalugu multipurpose dam.
The statement also indicated that, the assessment was conducted through close collaboration between NADMO, UN and the Capacity for Disaster Reduction Initiative (CADRI), a coalition of humanitarian and development organizations. The report is a key milestone in Ghana’s journey to enhance disaster risk management and climate resilience and involved consultations with over 80 stakeholders from various institutions, civil society, and the private sector.
Additionally, the government aims to develop an implementation and capacity-building plan, ensuring the recommendations are disseminated across regional and district levels. These efforts will align with international and national development frameworks, contributing to a more resilient and climate-prepared Ghana.
