Oxfam is contributing six hundred thousand dollars towards the fight against COVID-19 in Ghana.
The support includes the distribution of safety kits to service providers, public health education, building of local humanitarian leadership and strategic support to the state.
The Equality Program and Influencing Lead for Oxfam, Muhammed Mahamud, who presented the items on behalf of the Country Director for Oxfam, disclosed this when the organization presented sanitizers, surgical gloves, face masks and liquid soap to the Sagnerigu Municipal Assembly in the northern region.
The donation he noted is to support the assembly’s effort at combating COVID-19.
Mr. Mahamud disclosed that similar donations were made to some institutions in Accra.
He used the occasion to appeal to government to collaborate with Civil Society Organizations to reduce growing inequality as a result of the virus.
“Oxfam, whilst commending government for its efforts so far, entreats the government to take on board the inputs of CSOs in its decision-making regarding COVID-19 and work with them to ensure that the needs of the poor are adequately addressed, and to prevent the deepening of existing inequality because of the pandemic,” he said.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hajia Mariama Iddrisu commended Oxfam for the donation.
She disclosed that the assembly is overwhelmed with requests for PPEs from health facilities within the assembly.
The donation according to the MCE will be distributed to health facilities in the municipality.
Hajia Mariama appealed to benevolent individuals and organizations to support the assembly with PPEs to fight the disease.
