The Ningo Prampram District Assembly is alerting the public that certain parts of Dawhenya have been invaded by black flies. The blackfly is the vector that transmits onchocerciasis (river blindness). It breeds along fast-flowing water like rivers and streams.

The insect feeds on the blood of mammals, including humans, for nourishment.

A statement from the Assembly says it is working with the appropriate authorities to deal with the nuisance. It advised community members to remain calm and avoid being outdoors early in the mornings and evenings through the night if possible.

They must wear protective clothing to cover the skin as much as possible, apply insect repellents to exposed skin, keep trap doors and windows shut to prevent the insects from getting indoors, and report blackfly bites or any severe itching of the skin to the nearest health facility for medical attention.
